Are you thinking of something along these lines:

There are a lot of these type of devices. There’s this category in Amazon:

although most of the listed item here are just straight up networked storage (not media players).

Take a look here too:

How to use my hdtv as my computer monitor?

April 19th, 2010 | 1 Comment | Posted in computer

Installed custom Windows 7 64bit on my computer last night. I had been using my hdtv as a monitor for the past month with Windows Vista with no problems. Now I want to continue using my hdtv as a monitor but all I see is a blank screen, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, a vga cable, my tv is a 32" LG hdtv. Can anyone help?

You have to open "display properties" and choose to extend your desktop onto that monitor.
Make sure you unplug it and plug it back in, and see if it recognizes it as a monitor (It’ll make a sound like you plugged in a usb device). If it makes three quick noises that are all low-pitched, it’s likely your hardware requires some kind of drivers that aren’t available. It’s possible that it’s your video card that needs drivers in order for the S-video-out to work.

Holdthe Windows key (between CTRL and ALT) and "Pause|Break", and it should open your system properties.
In there, go to the Device manager (I believe in Win7, it’s on the left side near the top). Check for anything with an X or exclamation over it. Also, check in "Display Adapters" and see if your other monitor is listed there.
Hope this helps!

How will increasing my computer’s memory improve the performance?

I want to upgrade my computer memory from 256k to 512K. What improvements will I see?

You mean from 256MB to 512 MB. You will see much better results, depending on your processor. The two work hand-in-hand. Programs will open quicker, respond quicker, yada yada.

How do I go about the process of playing Xbox Live on my computer monitor?

April 17th, 2010 | 3 Comments | Posted in computer

I am considering buying an Xbox 360; however, my main concern is connecting to Xbox live on my computer monitor. I understand that you need a VGA cable to play on the monitor. I also understand that you have to connect the ethernet cable into your wireless router. But, how do I switch between playing the 360 on my computer monitor to browsing the web?

I use to do this all the time. But then I bought a new TV….’
But anyways, you really can’t. Your monitor only has one VGA input, so in this case, you don’t have to turn anything off – you can just switch the cable! It is annoying, but it works no problem.

How do I erase all my information from my harddrive so I can get rid of it?

April 17th, 2010 | 4 Comments | Posted in computer accessories

I would like to dispose of my old harddrive but I want to make sure all of the information is deleted first so I am not a victim of indentiy theft. I am not that computer savvy. PLEASE HELP.

Download a nuke disk like this one: http://www.dban.org/about
Put it in your computer when you turn it on and boot it when it loads. Follow the options and settings (you may want to google if there’s settings you don’t understand) – i tend to go for the maximum number of erases and leave it on for a few days. If you’re binning it then do that first and then smash it with a hammer inside a bag to keep all the pieces in tact. Then bin it.

How do u install a harddrive on your computer?

April 16th, 2010 | 3 Comments | Posted in computer accessories

hey im running out of room, and i need a hardrive. and im gonna purchase one soon, im just wondeing how do u install a harddrive on your pc??? And can u transfer your data on your old harddrive and put it on your new one???

thanks

the slave/master system described in another answer is only relevant for IDE drives, SATA drives don’t need to do that.

When you purchase a new hard drive, open the case of your computer, plug in the power and SATA wire and turn on your computer.

If it doesn’t automatically show up, there is a utility in control panel to format unformatted space.

COmputer memory?

Can you use DDR2 667 Ram with a boar dthat says uses DDR2 800

If you don’t use memory that’s rated at least as fast as the board, you risk memory errors. The 667 RAM can’t necessarily keep-up with the 800 board speed. Could be risky. I wouldn’t chance it.

How do you connect a PS3 up to a desktop computer monitor?

April 16th, 2010 | 3 Comments | Posted in computer

Recently I bought a new computer, and so I have my old computers monitor. My question is; is it possible to connect my PS3 up to it? Thanks – 10 points for working answer!

you need a HDMI/DVI adapter to make it happen. The connectors on the adapter I used were HDMI female and DVI male. I plugged my PS3 HDMI cable into the adapter which was plugged into the monitor. The adapter I used plugged directly into the monitor with no cable. It was slightly wide, and that caused a little bit of an issue as the two monitor inputs were used and the cable connectors pushed against each other slightly. Be aware of this if you intend to use both monitor inputs.

How can I get my laptop to connect to the Internet?

April 15th, 2010 | 2 Comments | Posted in computer

Basicly I can’t get my bt home hub to connect to my HP laptop. I know there is nothing wrong with the Internet connection itself because it works on my PC. It says on my laptop that the connection is working but when I try and open firefox or msn it doesnt work. I have tried resetting the home hub and the connection on the laptop but it didn’t work.

Do you have a local area connection in your house, or near it?If you do, you can go to Best-Buy, or any other electronics store and buy a Wireless USB Adapter for the internet.I’m surprised your computer doesn’t have one already in it.If you don’t have a local area connection, you can buy one at any electronics store, and get it set up with Bellsouth or something.Maybe your PC is connecting off a neighbors local area connectino.Hope I helped :c)
